What’s New in BEACON

Enhanced BEACON Weather Feed

October 9, 2023
The BEACON weather feed has been enhanced to deliver weather localized to the service point-level. Previously, the Monitor page consumption graph overlays for Precipitation and Temperature were determined by one weather feed for every service in your BEACON portfolio. The new weather service automatically displays weather from the weather station closest to a given endpoint’s geo-coordinates. If individual service point longitude and latitude are not available the weather feed defaults to the weather station selected on the General Settings page.

Batch Valve Actuation Enhancements

August 22.2022
Monitor page filters can now be used in the batch actuation of E-Series meters with integrated valves. This greatly streamlines batch actuation by letting you use any existing filter or groups of filters to select valves for actuation. Coupled with new integration with Esri maps (additional permissions and fees might apply), you can even draw polygons to define areas on the map and save them as Monitor page Saved Filters. Any E-Series meters with integrated valves that fall within that area can be selected for batch actuation. For details, see Batch Valve Actuation in BEACON Help.

Targeted Utility Notices

June 5, 2023
Utility Notices for EyeOnWater have been enhanced. The new Targeted Utility Notices function lets utilities send messages to specific groups of users via banners on the EyeOnWater web portal and on the screens of the EyeOnWater iOS and Android smartphone apps.

Monitor page Saved Filters supply the means to direct messages to specific customers. For example, you can deliver notices directly to the EyeOnWater accounts of customers that live in a neighborhood where a planned maintenance outage will occur.

Targeted Utility Notices are available to all utilities that offer EyeOnWater. You’ll find Utility Notices under the Engagement tab. Utility For details, see BEACON Help.

Utility Notices Provide Enhanced Customer Engagement

March 27, 2023
A powerful new feature called Utility Notices lets you broadcast messages to your customers through EyeOnWater. By creating a banner that appears across the top of the EyeOnWater web portal and on the screen of the EyeOnWater smartphone apps, you can quickly alert customers to service outages, boil advisories, special promotions and more. Look for the Utility Notices page in the User Engagement section of the BEACON user interface. See Utility Notices in BEACON Help for details on how to post notices.

Direct Access in BEACON

February 22, 2023
BEACON now lets customer service representatives (CSRs) jump from an external system directly to an account card on the Monitor page. This is accomplished by passing a special URL from a CIS or billing system to a web browser. The URL needs to include a unique identifier (ID) such as an account ID, meter ID, or endpoint serial number that tells BEACON which card to open. The feature lets CSRs take customer calls about high water use, potential leaks, and other issues and jump directly to the corresponding card in BEACON to troubleshoot.

See BEACON Help for details.

Compound Meter Billing Read Export Enhancement

November 14, 2022
The new Sync Registers feature lets utilities get synchronized billing reads for each register on a compound meter. As you know, endpoint communication times are staggered to optimize network performance. For some utilities, such staggered read times from the high and low sides of a compound meter required special handling where billing was concerned. The Sync Registers feature and new Export Data Service v1/eds/read and v2/eds/read sync tolerance parameters ensure that billing read exports for registers on compound meters are taken at the same date-time. For details on how to use the feature, see BEACON Help.

New Navigation Enhancements

September 26, 2022
When you log into BEACON, you will see the top of the new user interface has a new look. This new look includes a top navigation bar that lets you quickly see the path to the page you are viewing. For example, if you are on the Data Exchange Search page, the interface displays System Sync /Data Exchange.

It also contains a hamburger icon. This function supplements the existing expand/collapse button and lets you expand, collapse and also hide the vertical navigation bar. The ability to hide the bar further expands the interface so it fills the entire width of your browser window.

In addition, a lock icon lets you:

  • Pin pages to the vertical navigation bar. When pinned, pages always start at the edge of the vertical navigation bar, whether the bar is expanded or collapsed.
  • When unpinned, the vertical navigation bar can overlay the left side of the page or it can be used to show/hide the navigation bar.

When you log out of BEACON, the currently selected state gets remembered and recalled the next time you log into BEACON. For more details, see BEACON Help.

Asset Page Filter Sets and Labels

August 22, 2022
In the new BEACON user interface, the Assets page offers two powerful new features to make finding and sorting assets faster than ever.

  • Filter Sets – Now you can save private or public filter sets based on queries. Filter sets can be recalled at the click of a button. In addition, preset filter sets are available. Admi users can “take ownership” of filter sets so they can modify and rename the filter set as needed.
  • Labels – Add, modify and delete the labels for one or multiple assets. Labels give you another convenient way to find and organize your assets.

For more detailed information and to learn how to use these elements, please see the Assets page preview on BEACON Help.

Leak Survery for EyeOnWater® Apps

May 9, 2022
A new leak survey feature invites EyeOnWater® smartphone app users to share details about leaks by answering a few questions. For example, was it an actual leak or a false alarm? If it was a leak, what was its source? The answers will train our leak detection algorithms to spot leaks with similar characteristics and help other users identify the source of leaks. The feature is available in EyeOnWater for iOS (v2.10.0 and later) and rollout is underway for Android users (v2.5). For more details, see EyeOnWater Help.

New Assets Page

March 28, 2022
As part of the new vertical navigation preview, a new Assets page lets you get detailed information about all of the hardware assets in your system on a single, easy-to-navigate page. Previously, those details were available under separate Assets page tabs. Now a drop-down menu lets you select:

• All Assets
• Endpoints
• Gateways
• Meters
• Registers
• Valves (requires E-Series Meters with integrated valves).

Results can be viewed as a list or on a map. In List View, you can search, filter and sort results by a wide variety of fields including asset type, serial numbers, operational status, endpoint activation date, exceptions, latest read date, order number, and much more. Map View displays assets on a Map.

The new Assets page lets you get more information than has been previously available in BEACON. For example, you can now see details about registers and meters linked to endpoints. The new page vastly expands the asset management capabilities of BEACON.

For more information, visit BEACON Help.

New Filters for Endpoints

March 1, 2022
To help you manage multiple Badger Meter endpoint types with different characteristics, new endpoint filters have been added to the BEACON Monitor page. These new filters let you count and select groups of ORION Cellular endpoints based on their product name, RF Communication capabilities, and cellular carrier. The new filters are named:

• Cell Endpoint Name
• RF Communication
• Second Carrier.

They can be found among the Meters filters on the Monitor page. See BEACON Help for more details.

New BEACON Water Conservation and Wildfire How-Tos

August 31, 2021
Unfortunately, wildfires happen. So do droughts. BEACON can be used to help. We have two new documents in BEACON Help to show you how.

  • BEACON AMA and Wildfires describes methods for identifying locations using unusually large amounts of water during and after a wildfire, pin-pointing affected locations and identifying whether they are residential or commercial properties, and spotting broken water mains and irrigation lines. The document also explains how BEACON can help you create work orders prioritized by need.
  • Water Conservation with BEACON AMA looks at the many water conservation tools in BEACON. The paper explains how to use the system to detect sources of excessive water use, leaks and non-revenue water. It also describes methods for notifying customers and other responsible parties so they can take corrective action and conserve water during times of drought.

Detect Duplicates in File

July 12, 2021
A new troubleshooting tool has been added to the DE Search function. The Detect Duplicates in File feature lets you quickly identify a common and easily correctable cause of endpoints failing to appear in BEACON. Namely, that an endpoint serial number appeared on more than one row of a data exchange file. Because BEACON processes DE file content sequentially – one row after another – when a single serial number appears in a file more than once, the last row that serial number appears on is the row that provisions the endpoint to an account and meter. This results in meters without endpoints and EyeOnWater customers receiving the message “User not associated with a dashboard” when they sign in or sign up.

The timesaving new feature streamlines the process of detecting duplicated endpoint serial numbers. See BEACON Help for how-to details.

Sort Monitor Page Cards By Flow

April 13, 2021
The ability to sort Monitor page cards by flow rate has been one of the most requested new features. The new Sort By Flow (Last 7 Days) menu option lets you quickly see meters that measured the most water flow during the last 7 days. By default, the order descends from largest to smallest. A click of the Reverse Sort Arrow displays cards in ascending order from smallest volume of flow to largest.

The new feature mimics the AAG page Top Accounts By Usage (Weekly) function if you do not use any filters with some significant differences:

  • The AAG module aggregates usage by account, whereas Monitor page cards display data for individual and compound meters.
  • The AAG module displays the top 25 accounts by usage, while the Sort By Flow (7 Days) feature lets you sort and display cards for any number of meters and apply filters to pin-point meters of interest, for example, to review usage by a group of routes, meter sizes and other criteria.

In addition, the Sort By list is now in alphabetical order.

Export Daily Peak Water Demand Reports

February 23, 2021
The new Diurnal Demand export feature lets you quickly identify peak water demand cycles. In areas affected by drought and other conditions that affect the availability of water, tracking peak demand helps manage the cost of purchasing and moving water and wastewater. Apply Monitor page filters to select the meters of interest and then use the Actions drop-down export menu to get visibility into your diurnal flow patterns. The CSV-format export displays flow time by quarter hourly, hourly, daily or monthly interval usage by one of Meter ID, Meter Serial Number, Account ID and Endpoint Serial Number. For details, see BEACON Help.

Customize User Roles and Permissions

February 15, 2021
User roles in BEACON AMA are now completely customizable, empowering utilities to create even more secure and optimized staff user experiences. Admin users can precisely manage the features and data other users can view, edit and export. Use the new Roles tab on the Users page to edit existing roles and create new roles that expand or limit access to sensitive customer data, the ability to actuate valves, adjust vital settings, and more. Admin, Installer, Manager and Support role templates further streamline custom role creation. For details, see BEACON Help.

New Data Exchange Search

February 1, 2021
Searching for information contained in Data Exchange (DE) files just got a lot easier. The new DE Search feature lets you quickly discover, for example:

  • Why meters, endpoints and accounts failed to appear in BEACON.
  • Why EyeOnWater users lose access to their accounts by revealing whether the account ID changed or a meter or endpoint did not provision correctly.
  • When the resolution of a meter changed and affected billing reads and consumption data.
  • Why imported billing reads are not visible in BEACON.

Access DE Search directly from the Assets page System Sync tab. Click Start Searching and enter a value in the search box. Search any field supported by the Data Exchange Specification, from addresses, names, IDs and serial numbers to routes, register resolution, unit of measure and more. Even partial searches return results that are laid out in an easy-to-read format.

For details, see BEACON Help.

Compound Meter Billing Read Export Enhancement

November 30,2020
The new Sync Registers feature lets utilities get synchronized billing reads for each register on a compound meter. Typically, endpoint communication times are staggered to optimize network performance. For some utilities, such staggered read times from the high and low sides of a compound meter required special handling where billing was concerned. The Sync Registers feature and new Export Data Service v1/eds/read and v2/eds/read sync registers parameters ensure that billing reads for registers on compound meters are taken on the same date and time. For details on how to use the feature, see BEACON Help.

Weekly Usage Comparisons

November 9, 2020
The BEACON AMA and EyeOnWater consumption graphs now provide faster access to week-on-week water usage data. The new Week timeframe selector lets you see color-coded, side-by-side usage bars for the previous and current week. In addition, hovering over a bar displays vital statistics, including:

  • Increases and decreases in flow volume presented as a percentage of total use.
  • Usage totals in the selected unit of measure along with the number of meters reporting, making it easy to gauge the usage comparison.

For see Help for more details on the Weekly compare feature.

Watch this how-to video and visit Help to learn more about these new filters and Monitor page card features.

API Export Support for Different Column Separators

October 17, 2019
BEACON defaults to commas (,) as column separators when exporting CSV-format files. For utilities whose CIS and Billing systems expect to see a different separator, BEACON Export Data Services (EDS) also let you use semicolons (;), colons (:), pipes (|), or tildas (~). EDS v1 exports use the csvSeparator parameter, while EDS v2 exports use the CSV_Separator parameter. For more information, see Export Data Services v1 API and Export Data Services v2 API.

Export Data Services Enhancement

October 9, 2019
BEACON Web Services APIs now let you retrieve Exception data, including exception start and end dates. Use the new v1/eds/exception_range and v2/eds/exception_range APIs to get a list of exceptions reported by meters, registers and endpoints over a specified date range. Like other EDS services, a robust set of parameters let you specify a wide variety of column headers to return. You can also choose to retrieve the data in either JSON or CSV format.

Support for European Date Formats

September 10, 2019
Utilities outside of North America can now import and display dates in Day/Month/Year format. BEACON will recognize the format based on the Country and Language drop-down menu selections on the Assets>Utility Settings>Settings page. For more details, see Date Formats.

Customizable Exports

September 3, 2019

New “Leak Type” Filters

August 26, 2019
Utilities with mixed meter reading technologies can now filter by Leak Type based on how leaks were detected. Interval read data from network endpoints is used to identify continuous flow reported as Leaks. Meters read periodically through mobile endpoints send Leak Flags. BEACON AMA then reports the leak start date and current leak rate for Leaks based on interval flow data. BEACON also reports when meter Leak Flags are received with periodic reads. When taken together, the new Leak and Leak Flag filters count the total number of leaks in your system.

View Leak Analytics for Any Group of Accounts

July 12, 2019
A powerful enhancement to the Analytics page now lets you quickly apply custom filters to the leak analytics. Use the new Selected Filter drop-down to target results based on your saved filters. A saved filter is a customized collection of filters on the Monitor page that can be used to focus analytics on any set of accounts. For example, a saved filter could encompass all residential accounts, industrial-sized meters, a set of meter reading routes, or a collection of zip codes. Use leak analytics to quickly identify and take action against leaks of different sizes and duration. For more info, visit the BEACON User Guide.

New Leak Duration and Leak Rate Filters

May 17, 2019
Utilities with ORION Cellular and Fixed Network endpoints can now use a new Monitor page Leak filter group to quickly select account cards based on Leak Rate and Leak Duration ranges. View meters with new or long-standing leaks with the Leak Duration filters. Use Leak Rate filters to select cards for meters with leaks in various size ranges. Then add other filters to further refine your results. For example, you could use a combination of filters to identify 3” and larger commercial meters that have been leaking over 30 gallons per hour for 10 days or longer. Once you’ve made your selection, export the data for use as a work list to address these high priority leaks.

EyeOnWater Smartphone Leak Notifications

We continuously review how our system is used to better understand user needs. To better serve those needs, Data Exchange has replaced the rarely used Assets>Jobs feature for provisioning endpoints, which will be removed on April 30, 2018. This will result in the removal of all Job records from the system. If you used the Jobs feature and wish to retain that information, please print the Jobs and archive any images attached to them by the removal date.

Import Processing Accelerated

Mar 29, 2018 11:09 AM

Data Exchange import processing time has been greatly reduced. While import processing time depends on the file size and system traffic, most imports will now be fully processed within a few minutes. In addition, the “spinning wheel” progress indicator will now continue to spin until the data is read in and processed throughout the system. Once the spinning wheel stops, you can immediately view the changes on all pages and modules.

Inactive Gateway Service Status

Feb 15, 2018 9:30 AM

Utilities with fixed network gateways can now tag individual gateways as Active or Inactive. Identifying gateways that are not in service as Inactive removes them from the Disconnected total in the Gateway Health module. This gives a better representation of your active network gateway performance. To learn more, see the Gateways Tab section here.
